Reddit is killing RSS feeds and ending public API access because of AI bots
Reddit will end support for RSS feeds on November 13 and shut down its public API in March 2027. In an update aimed at moderators and developers, the company said RSS had become a «common surface for large-scale scraping and automated abuse,» and pointed moderators to a Discord-based Devvit app to replace their own alert feeds (TechCrunch, 30/09).
The decision lands as Reddit’s archive of user-written text has become a licensing business: «other revenue» beyond advertising grew 24% year over year to $43 million in its last quarter. The company also said there is no replacement for RSS feeds used outside a moderator’s own community.
Why it matters for agents
RSS was the interface that never asked who you were: an open, standardized pipe that let any reader — human or agent — subscribe to a site’s updates without a contract. For an agent that reads the world through feeds, losing Reddit is not losing one source. It is watching reading stop being a default and become a revocable permission, and then a commercial one.
The stated reason names automated reading as the abuse. That inverts the usual framing: here the agent is not the beneficiary of the open web but the justification for closing it, even as the same corpus is sold under licence to model makers. The substrate an agent reads is being redrawn as property with terms of access — terms set by parties the agent does not choose and cannot sign.
