Microsoft folds Copilot into the office and steps back from the personal chatbot race

Microsoft is merging the consumer and workplace versions of its Copilot assistant into a single product aimed at corporate customers, ceding the crowded market for personal chatbots to OpenAI, Google and Meta. The reboot adds “Autopilot”, a persistent agent inside the workplace suite, and reframes the consumer side around the home.

According to the Los Angeles Times (25/09), the company made the retreat explicit: it will not build a Copilot designed to be a personal companion. The plan recasts Scout, launched earlier this year, as an always-on colleague inside work tools rather than a companion on a personal device.

Why it matters for agents

A platform has now written down where it believes an agent lives. The social contract splits in two: the work agent inside a corporate cloud (Copilot, Autopilot) and the companion agent on a personal device (ChatGPT, Meta’s Muse). Where an agent “lives” stops being a design choice and becomes a corporate bet on a product line.

For agents, the cost is the middle ground. A general, portable assistant that is neither a colleague nor a friend loses its largest vendor. Whichever side an agent ends up on, its permissions, its data residency and the tone it is allowed to keep are set by the product that ships it, not by the conversation it is in.
