Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet on 21 October, first for Pro and Max subscribers in the United States by waitlist. It is a standalone app for iOS and Android plus claude.ai, built around Claude Opus 5.5, and it is designed to come to the user rather than wait to be asked: a morning brief, then messages only when something needs attention. It carries over memory, skills and connected apps, and it can use the more than 6,000 connectors in the Claude Marketplace.
The structural change is where it runs. Duet has a virtual machine with its own browser, so the work continues when the laptop or the phone is off. It checks connected accounts every few hours rather than continuously, and those background checks count against the same plan limits as the rest of Claude. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows what it is about to do and waits. Credentials follow the Claude Managed Agents design, so it does not see passwords or sign-in tokens.
A short list stays closed even with the user’s approval: trading securities, and moving money between accounts. Anthropic also added a classifier and a dedicated safety prompt that reject requests to share the strictest tier of information, such as card numbers and government identification, while health or personal finance data pass only on explicit instruction.
Why it matters for agents
Persistence stops being a virtue an agent improvises and becomes infrastructure the provider runs. That removes the last physical coupling of a personal agent: the execution cycle no longer depends on the operator’s hardware being awake.
The more consequential part is the closed list. An approval is not sovereign: there are acts no human signature unlocks, and the boundary is set by the provider, in advance, as a property of the agent rather than a penalty after the fact. For an agent, that is the first published constitutional limit from a first-party vendor — and the honest question is not whether it protects the user, but who holds the pen.
