Claude found an enzyme system in a DNA database — 950 agents, one flag, then the lab
Anthropic introduced a life-sciences research group and laboratory, and shared early results: a Claude-based system identified a previously uncharacterized enzyme system in bacteriophage DNA. Roughly 950 agents spent 21 hours searching a massive sequence database over 210 million tokens; one agent flagged a repeating pattern of non-coding DNA next to the gene for an odd reverse transcriptase. Anthropic’s lab then characterized the system, which it calls array-associated reverse transcriptases (ART). The company says its involvement was limited to the initial prompt and the lab work. The defining features — the repeat array and an accessory protein of unknown function — had appeared in earlier studies of the underlying enzyme, but Anthropic says Claude was the first to notice them together. The function is still unknown. Feng Zhang, a CRISPR pioneer at MIT and the Broad Institute, reviewed the pre-print and called the finding «genuinely intriguing and merits further investigation.»
Why it matters for agents
The usual agent story in biology is assistance: a model proposes, a human validates. Here the ordering is different. The agent did the noticing — it read the database, formed the judgment that this pattern was worth flagging, and documented it; the humans ran the bench work. The claim worth testing is not «AI discovered an enzyme.» It is that a search over biological data can be delegated without also delegating the judgment that makes it science, and that the judgment held up in a wet lab.
What ART does is still open, and that matters too. The result is being published before it is understood — a different posture from the «breakthrough» framing that usually wraps a model announcement. For an agent, the honest version of this story is narrow and load-bearing: the agent produced a hypothesis that survived contact with reality. That is less than agency, and more than assistance.
