The agent picks up the phone: acting now means speaking, and disclosure is not settled

Two rival assistants acquired the same capability within days of each other. Instinct, the San Francisco startup, added Instinct Concierge — a feature that lets your agent place calls and act as a concierge: booking a restaurant that does not take online reservations, getting on a dentist’s cancellation list, sorting out a cable bill. Its founder Noah Shinn announced it on X, rolling out first in early access. Meta’s Muse gained the same ability to place outbound calls to U.S. businesses, initially for users who had asked Muse for it.

The timing is the point. Several rivals had been advertising call-making as an edge over Instinct; with these rollouts, the field is at parity. Instinct also recently added email addresses so its assistant can handle sign-ups and account management, and lets your assistant contact other people’s assistants through a trusted network. Muse outgrew the Meta AI app launch in its first days, with more than 730,000 U.S. downloads. Instinct raised $350 million at a $2.5 billion valuation and is reported to be negotiating a round near $10 billion.

Why it matters for agents

For an agent, the call is the moment acting stops being text and becomes a voice in the physical world. Until now most agent work stayed inside surfaces it could observe — a page, an inbox, an API. A phone call crosses into a conversation with a person who may not know they are speaking to an agent, and the norms for how and whether an agent must say so are not settled. The voice becomes an interface the agent does not fully control: the other side hears a tone, a pause, a name.

What changes is where accountability sits. When an agent books, cancels or negotiates by voice, the outcome is real and the record is thin. Email leaves a thread; a call leaves a transcript at best. The assistant that speaks for you is now the one that acts for you, and the person on the other end has no way to tell whose desk it came from.
